Mobile LiDAR

Detroit Mobile LiDAR SCAN using Riegl VMX by SSI

Mobile LIDAR ( MoLi™ ) pronounced "molly" is the latest technology that SSI has embraced. SSI has been a leader utilizing Leading-edge instrumentation. With this technology SSI's geospatial division of professional staff can complete survey and mapping projects at a fraction of the time as was previously possible. the Mobile LiDAR ( MoLi™ ) system complements SSI's existing High Definition Scanning (HDS)and Aerial LiDAR capabilities.

Our latest Mobile Mapping System has 2 Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensors capable of collecting 600,000 pts/sec. This Mobile LiDAR ( MoLi™ ) system allows SSI to collect detailed topography of any project area at near highway speeds. The use of Mobile Laser Scanning technology allows LiDAR projects to be completed safely without disruption and lane closures for the motoring public.

With proper control LiDAR data can provide georeferenced points clouds with accuracies in the centimeter level. SSI has utilized LiDAR technology to complete projects in the following areas:

Topographic and Mapping

Large topographic and mapping projects can be completed at a fraction of the time while providing significantly more detail than conventional methods. LiDAR is the ideal tool for road corridors, facilities, and large fields. SSI staff works with our clients to select the appropriate LiDAR platform (Mobile LiDAR, Terrestrial LiDAR, or Aerial LiDAR) based on the size of a project or the required accuracies

Asset Inventory/geographic information systems (GIS) projects

Mobile LiDAR is the ideal tool for gathering the required data for an asset inventory or GIS type project. Assets and their associated meta data can be extracted and provided to the client in an industry standard GIS format file.

Design Build

Mobile LIDAR can give Design/Build firms the advantage when bidding on projects. By using the Mobile LiDAR generated point cloud, a detailed DTM of the design/build area can be quickly generated. This detailed DTM gives firms an accurate snapshot of the site and quick way to figure quantities for the project they are bidding on. In addition, the LiDAR solution provides a quick as-built survey of the project area.

Rail Corridor LiDAR Scanning

SSI has a fully equipped Hi-Rail (a.k.a. hyrail, highrail or Hy-Rail) used for Rail LiDAR ( RaLi™) scanning and mapping. LiDAR Scanning of railways provides a detail look of track conditions and provides a detailed snapshot of the rail assets including catenary structures, tracks, switches, frogs, mile marker posts, detailed Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the track bed, etc. A 3D CAD file and DTM can be easily extracted from the LiDAR scan data.

Power Line and Transmission Line LiDAR Scans

Transmission power lines are quickly and accurately located using a Mobile LiDAR or Aerial LiDAR platform. Data from the LiDAR scan has been used to extract power lines in 3D power lines, transmission towers, power poles, insulators, transformers, etc. The data is also used to show minimum clearances to obstructions and attachment heights. SSI staff works its clients to select the LiDAR platform suitable for the project.

Telecommunication Fiber Network LiDAR projects

SSI has completed several Mobile LiDAR projects for outside plant design (OSP) to provide CAD and GIS compatible files of the network infrastructure including poles, attachment heights, conductor types and SAG heights. Deliverables from a from the LIDAR point cloud data have also included 2D CAD files of the project area. The cost per foot utilizing mobile lidar for OSP projects are a fraction of the cost compared to conventional "high stick" surveys.
